Condolences came in from around the world for former Israeli President Shimon Peres.

On Tuesday, Shimon Peres passed away after suffering a stroke. The stroke left Peres in critical condition for two weeks.

Peres was 93 years old. Some of the people who sent their condolences were French President Francois Hollande, former United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron, Comedian and Actress Judy Gold, and Actor Sebastian Roche.

Former Presidents George HW Bush, Bill Clinton and Democratic Presidential Nominee Hillary Clinton, and President Obama sent their condolences as well.

Hollande, Cameron, Gold, and Roche tweeted their condolences. Hollande tweeted that Peres was “a peace advocate and a loyal friend of France.” Cameron described Peres as “a believer in peace” and “a gentleman.” Gold simple tweeted “Rest In Peace,” while Roche tweeted that Peres was “a giant in the fight for peace.”

In his statement on Peres’ passing, President Obama wrote, “A light has gone out, but the hope he gave us will burn forever. Shimon Peres was a soldier for Israel-for peace, and for the belief that we can be true to our best selves…For the gift of his friendship and the example of his leadership, todah rabah ("thank you very much"), Shimon.

Peres was born in 1923. Peres was one of the key figures who helped develop Israel’s military, specifically the country’s navy and nuclear program; which Israel does not acknowledge.

Peres won the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the Oslo Accord, which former President Bill Clinton hosted at Camp David.

Peres shared the award with former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rubin and former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

In 2012, President Obama awarded Peres with the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom for his continuing efforts in bringing peace to the Middle East.
